While the push for environmentally friendly electronic and electrical products has been ongoing for years, the shift from consumer-driven demand to legislative initiatives has only recently gained prominence. With the proliferation of consumer electronics and electrical equipment, the matter has reached a point where legislative recognition has become essential.
The EU (European Union) Directive on RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and the WEEE Directive (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment), focusing on equipment recyclability, have established guidelines for the proper handling of such products and the materials they incorporate. Although there is currently no federal legislation akin to RoHS or WEEE in the United States, certain states have enacted laws mirroring the EU Directives.
Which products fall under these regulations?
- Household appliances
- IT and telecommunication equipment
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting
- Electrical and electronic tools (excluding large-scale stationary industrial tools)
- Toys, leisure, and sports equipment
- Automatic dispensers
- Medical devices
- Monitoring and control instruments
While these directives specifically target products primarily manufactured for the EU, Stahlin® Enclosures has assessed its products for compliance with both directives. Regarding WEEE legislation, which primarily addresses end-use products and not empty enclosures, we believe that our empty enclosure products are not covered under the WEEE directive. As always, Stahlin® Enclosures will remain vigilant in monitoring the evolution of these and other regulations, ensuring timely updates on market conditions and requirements for our products and services.
